It is issued by the host country and is valid for five years or until the traveler’s passport expires. However, the eTA can be invalidated by the appropriate officer if the traveler is inadmissible to that country. An eTA is automatically issued to visa-exempt foreign nationals who apply for a work permit or a study permit to travel to a country without a visa.

To apply for an eTA, you must be a citizen of a visa-exempt country and hold a valid passport. An eTA can be applied for online through CIC. The application process only takes a few minutes and costs $7 CAD. After your application is processed, you will receive a confirmation email from CIC. You don’t need to print out the confirmation email as it is linked to your passport.
